History of Puerto Amalia

Puerto Amalia offers a glimpse into the ancient Maya civilization. The area was first settled around 400 BCE and flourished as a significant trading hub due to its strategic location on the coast of Chetumal Bay, near the mouth of the New River. This prime location facilitated trade with other Maya cities and regions, contributing to its early growth and prosperity.

The area peaked between 100 BCE and 100 CE. During this period the City of Cerros saw extensive construction and urban development. Notable architectural features include large pyramids, temples, and plazas. The site is especially known for its impressive temple pyramids adorned with stucco masks depicting Maya deities and rulers. These structures not only served religious purposes but also demonstrated the city's wealth and political power.

Today, Cerros is a protected archaeological site managed by the Belizean government. It attracts tourists, historians, and archaeologists who come to explore its ancient temples, plazas, and stunning coastal views. Puerto Amalia is not a part of the Cerros archaeological site and is not a protected area, this makes it a prime real estate opportunity.
